Graduation Requirements

All public high school students are required to meet statewide graduation requirements in order to earn a diploma. The goal is that more students will be better prepared to meet 21st century demands in their working and personal lives. Within these pages, families, students and educators can learn more about each of the new requirements, including what each requirement is designed to do and how students will be supported.


The state graduation requirements are as follows:

  1. Earn high school credit (minimum number of credits set by your respective school district)
  2. Complete a High School and Beyond Plan
  3. Complete a Culminating Project
  4. Pass state tests showing achievement in basic skills OR complete state-approved alternatives to those tests

Required courses

Language Arts (4.0 Credits)

* English 9 A and B (1.0 Credit)
* English A: English 10 (.5 Credit)
* English B: Modern American Literature (.5 Credit) (or Modern American Voices based on teacher recommendation)
* English C: Speech (.5 Credit) (or Basic Communication based on teacher recommendation)
The remaining 1.5 Language Arts credits may be selected from any of the Language Arts courses.

Social Studies (4.0 Credits)

* Civics (.5 Credit) and Careers (.5 Credit) (Taken in 9th grade)
* U.S. History A and B or AP US History A and B (1.0 Credit) (Taken in Grade 10)
* World History A and B (1.0 Credits)
* Economics (.5 Credit)
* Social Science Elective Chosen by Student (.5 Credit)

Mathematics (3.0 Credit)

* Algebra I A and B (1.0 Credit) OR Integrated I A and B (1.0 Credit)
* Geometry A and B (1.0 Credit) OR Integrated II A and B (1.0 Credit)
* Algebra II A and B (1.0 Credit) OR Integrated III A and B (1.0 Credit)

Science (3.0 Credits)

* Science 9 A and B (1.0 Credit) (Taken in 9th Grade)
* Biology A and B or AP Biology A and B (1.0 Credit) and Comparative Anatomy (.5) OR Forensic Biology (.5 Credit) and Methods in Field Biology (.5 Credit)
* Chemistry A, or Accelerated Chemistry, or Chemistry in the Community (.5 Credit)
* Science Elective (.5 Credit)

Physical Education

* (1.0 Credit, .5 taken in 9th Grade, and .5 taken in 10th grade) AND Health (.5 Credit taken in 10th grade)

Industrial Technology/Family and Consumer Science

* (.25 Credit) and Business Education (.25 Credit)

The Arts (1.0 Credit)
