Mountainside High School Departments
Language Arts
The Language Arts Department encompasses all components of the communication process—reading, writing, speaking and listening. The fundamental goal is to develop effective communication skills that will serve as tools for acquiring and applying other skills and knowledge. To communicate is to participate in an active, purposeful process that results in shared meaning.

Because the communications skills are interrelated and interdependent, they should be taught concurrently and reinforced continuously. Effective language instruction is balanced between the two receptive processes of listening and reading and the two expressive processes of speaking and writing. Students need to communicate—engage in purposeful discussions in order to make meaningful connections with what they are learning.

The language arts classroom provides a supportive environment for the students as they are encouraged to experiment and take risks with using language. Teachers deliver instruction appropriate for all learners, using a variety of resources, assessments, and technology.

Social Studies
The Buffalo School District Social Studies Curriculum provides a variety of experiences and learning opportunities for students which prepare them to be active citizens of the United States and the world.  In high school, students are required to complete courses in geography, world history, United States history, government, and economics. Advanced Placement and gifted courses are offered for high school students who excel in the social studies.

Students have opportunities for enrichment through course electives and participation in programs such as Model U.N., Close-up, District Mock Trial, Valley Forge Program, Stock Market Game, Renaissance Festival, social science fairs, essay contests and map contests. Clayton County students achieve high placement in state competitions such as the Governor's Honor's Program.

Mathematics

Students need to see that mathematics is more than a collection of concepts and skills to be mastered; it includes methods of investigating, reasoning, and communicating. It includes the ability to set up problems with the appropriate operations, the knowledge of a variety of techniques to approach and work on problems, the understanding of the underlying mathematical features of a problem, the ability to work with others on problems, the preparation for open problem situations, and the belief in the utility and value of mathematics.

Believing that every student is capable of learning mathematics, opportunities are provided for all students to strive toward their maximum potential and to increase their confidence in themselves and in their own abilities. Teachers and parents work together in helping students to appreciate mathematics, to grow more proficient mathematically, and to realize that mathematical skills are stepping stones to success. Mathematics instruction must continue to grow to meet the changing demands of our society. Literacy in Mathematics requires understandings and habits of mind that enable citizens to make sense of our world, to think critically and independently, to recognize and weigh alternative explanations, and to deal reasonably with problems that involve numbers, patterns, and logical arguments.

Science
The terms and circumstances of human existence can be expected to change radically during the next human life span. Science, mathematics, and technology will be at the center of that change--causing it, shaping it, responding to it. Therefore, they will be essential to the education of today's children for tomorrow's world.

We promote literacy in science, mathematics, and technology in order to help people live interesting, responsible, and productive lives. Science literacy requires understandings and habits of mind that enable citizens to make sense of how the natural and designed world work, to think critically and independently, to recognize and weigh alternative explanations of events and design trade-offs, and to deal sensibly with problems that involve evidence, numbers, patterns, logical arguments and uncertainties.

Physical Education
High school physical education programs focus on personal fitness with opportunities to explore a variety of individual and team sports. The Personal Fitness course is usually scheduled in the ninth or tenth grade year and is required for graduation. Computerized fat analysis and heart rate equipment is available in all high schools. After thorough assessment, students set personal health/fitness goals that they are encouraged to maintain for a lifetime. Other physical education courses offered include; Physical Conditioning, Weight Training, various recreational games, team and lifetime sports, track and field, rhythms and outdoor education.

Industrial Technology/Family and Consumer Science

The mission of Buffalo School District Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education program is to work collaboratively with business and community partners to provide opportunities for all students to develop technical, academic, and employability skills which prepare them to pursue their chosen career as productive citizens and lifelong learners.
