Awards and Accolades

The Colorado Department of Education offers many awards and special distinctions to schools that foster involvement and participation by parents, business partners, volunteers and the community at large. Plan to work with your principal and school faculty to qualify and apply for these outstanding opportunities. The Community and Family Engagement Office sends award applications at least four weeks in advance of the deadline.


Awards
Outstanding School Volunteer Award
The Outstanding School Volunteer Award is presented annually to school volunteers who have shown outstanding dedication and commitment to quality education in Colorado. Winners are selected in one of three categories: adult, senior and student. A school may nominate one volunteer in each category. A District Volunteer of the Year for each category is then selected by a committee and recognized at a school board meeting. Volunteers are selected based on: number of hours, years of service, unusual contribution, and/or characteristics of services rendered.

Terry Kingson, Senior Volunteer of the Year

Parent Involvement Award - Due in March
The Parent Involvement Award is sponsored by the Colorado Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and supported through business partnerships. Programs are evaluated on their: impact on family involvement, ability to be replicated, relationship to the goals and objectives of the school, participation of parents/families in the planning and implementation, uniqueness and innovation, impact on school improvement, method of funding, and partnerships.

The Colorado PTA recognizes the winning programs at a luncheon during their summer leadership conference. Over 1,000 PTA members honor the ten regional program winners and attend workshops featuring the exemplary programs. A booklet is produced annually with a summary of model family involvement programs from participating districts.

Golden School Award - Due in April
The Golden School Award is given annually to recognize public schools with exemplary volunteer programs. Hours donated in all forms of volunteering (i.e., mentors, tutors, advisors, and advocates) are to be included. The award is presented to the schools that meet the following criteria: provides faculty training/orientation on volunteerism, designates a school volunteer coordinator to provide leadership for the school volunteer program, fulfills a total number of hours in volunteer service that equals twice the number of students enrolled in the school.

Silver School Award - Due in April
The Silver School Award is presented annually to recognize secondary schools whose students provide exemplary volunteer services to elementary and secondary schools. The award is presented to the schools that meet the following criteria:

    * The sending school must have a school volunteer coordinator.
    * The receiving school must have a volunteer coordinator.
    * Student volunteers and the receiving faculty must both receive orientation and training.
    * Student volunteers must receive continuous supervision.
    * The composite student volunteer hours must equal at least one half the total number of students in the sending school.

Five Star School Award - Due in May
The Five Star School Award was created by the Commissioner's Community Involvement Council and is presented annually to those schools that have shown evidence of exemplary community involvement. In order to earn Five Star school recognition, a school must show documentation that it has achieved 100% of the established criteria in the categories of: Business partnerships, Family Involvement, Volunteerism, Student Community Service, and School Advisory Councils.
