![]() The Buffalo School District Governing Board approved changes to the 2008- 09 High School Planning Guide with regard to the calculation of class ranking. The Board approved the calculation of class rank using the academic grade point average (GPA) rather than the overall grade point average (GPA). The academic GPA is calculated using courses in the core academic content areas: English, mathematics, science, social studies and foreign language. An additional change to the Planning Guide was the elimination of the grading scale used for special education courses. These policy changes will be implemented for students starting with the Class of 2009. The academic GPA is calculated using all academic courses with their associated grade points divided by the total number of grade points earned. Academic courses carrying an honors distinction and weight will count as such in the calculation of the academic GPA; therefore, it is a weighted GPA. The academic GPA will determine the rank in class for each student. The rank in class is reported as a percentile rank which is based on the students rank and the total number of students in the class. The District reports rank in class for college admission purposes onlyat the end of the sixth (6th) semester. The rank in class will be reported both as a number and a percentile rank. You will be receiving a copy of your child’s transcript after the calculation of the 6th semester ranking. As your child begins the admissions process this is a valuable opportunity to review the transcript to ensure that all credits and grades have been appropriately credited. If you have any questions or concerns regarding a course or credit assigned on the transcript please contact the school registrar. Sincerely,
